Work keeps us busy, defines our value in society and often gives us a social life. What happens when that goes away?
___
from “When It Comes to Retirement, I’m With Cicero”, by  Jim Michaels
in a commentary that appeared in the January 12, 2019, print edition of the Wall Street Journal
https://www.wsj.com/articles/when-it-comes-to-retirement-im-with-cicero-11547249534

I was one of those men described in this commentary who 1) worked to keep busy, so that I was never bored, 2) defined my value in society by my professional role and 3) had no real social life other than with my co-workers (they were always the ones with whom I had my most important conversations and interactions).

I was fortunate … when my retirement day came, I had dealt with all three of those; I no longer needed to work for any one of those three things.  I was done; I knew it, and my employers, I’m sure, knew it too.

There was one thing that I had not come to grips with:  guilt.  I realized that I felt guilty for no longer wanting to work.  After reading this article, I realized it was completely wrong for me, at my age (61) to feel guilty about not wanting to work.

And I’m totally at peace with my choice.  It was so right, and so timely.

And my life just got way better.

Believe it or not, retiring from the workplace gave me what I always needed.  The best year of my adult life was 2020, which was three years after I retired.
