IS THERE A BRIDGE FROM FICTION TO FACT?
Did you ever notice how difficult it is for a child to get rid of their “security blanket”? I remember with my children (twins) I had quite a time. We set a mark of 3 days on the calendar when we were going to make a decision to get rid of the “blankees”. Now, these young ladies were only, I think, two and a half or three years old and they had their blankees with them 24/7, if you know what I mean (except for washing and drying).
When the three days rolled around I had a nice fire going and the big event was about to take place – so I thought. I’ll give the first initial of their names, K and J. Well, I made the spiel about “are you now ready to give up your first, old blankee and go on to better and more grown up things”. They both had looks of doubt on their faces, standing there with their right thumb in their mouths and the corner of the blankee up around their nose.
Then, like a cloud passed over, K decided she was ready to throw hers in the fire, and swoosh there it went. No remorse whatsoever. J hesitated a little and acted like she would but she really didn’t want to, so I said, “O.K., let’s rip this piece of it off, it’s ready to fall off anyway, and throw it in the fire and tomorrow I’ll build another fire”. That pleased her quite well. I really didn’t want them to rush into trauma regardless of how small. It wasn’t small to them. The next day she was quite anxious for me to build the fire. In fact, I had to make her wait till the fire was going well. I think they were both pretty proud of themselves.
Now, why did I say all of that? I said it all to call to your attention some simple facts. You and I are no different than those little girls. We have our little security blankets and pity the soul that tries to separate them from us. You know what I’m saying, don’t you? This is the way I was taught, this is the way I believe, I’ll continue this way, and probably die this way.
How many of us are going uphill to carry water down? With bamboo growing all around, it’s so easy to channel it to carry water down, so it makes sense and conforms to reality to put it to use. But, no, I’ve made that trip up that hill all my life, suffered many scrapes, falls, and bruises and I’m going to continue regardless of what you say. That’s exactly the consensus of the population. That’s why it’s easier to pull a chickens tooth than to get truth thru the doors of most churches.
Now, don’t think for a moment that crossing a bridge isn’t scary. It’s terrifying. And, the older you are before crossing that bridge, the scarier it is. So many of us will hang on to our old beliefs – even though we know they are not correct. It’s traumatic to release the old way of fables and reach for fact, just as it was traumatic to throw that old ragged “first” security blankee into the fire to have it no more.
This short article is not to teach you anything except to pay attention to your way of thinking. Do you have a pattern of, “I believe it because my Sunday School teacher and my grandmother told me so when I was five years old”? You are an adult with full mental capabilities. Does the Scripture, “when I was a child I thought as a child, but when I am become mature I put away childish things” mean anything to you? Of course, I paraphrase most of my work, but you know what I mean.

Truth is the bridge from fiction to fact. The builder of the bridge is waiting on the other side. He has many “rewards” there waiting for you. He wants you to cross His Bridge. He said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life”, don’t you recall? The point is, you won’t receive His rewards on the “fiction” side of the bridge. Let truth bear you up and cross over. Don’t accept anything until you prove it yourself with truth.
