I was 16, pregnant, and extremely immature for my age… was encouraged by family to have an abortion. Fortunately, it was tried but did not work. My baby was born right before my 17th birthday. I was one of the lucky ones. The father and I had gotten married and he was in the service. So, the baby and I had health care and a home to go to. Remember thinking at the time and hundreds of times since then, The day my baby was born was the day I started to live.
The baby, nicknamed Buddy, was a good baby. ..started walking at 9 months . ..took his first steps to his daddy on the ship he was assigned to. He had been out to sea during the Cuban missile crisis. Remember those first tentative steps like it was yesterday.
Years went by, Buddy decided he wanted to go to university at the last minute…got accepted at a state supported university out of town.He graduated , but not before I did. I went to a state supported university on a grant , for being white…the school was largely black. My degree was BS in nursing. His was English a little later.. Buddy always led the way. He still does, as my spirit guide.
Buddy was k----d going to work 4 years ago. At his memorial service, many of the children he worked with sent notes saying how much they loved him..as did so many others that day..some in person , some with their written words. …how much he changed their lives. I would have never gotten past my 11 th grade HS status if it were not for him. . He led the way. …with love.
