CONCEPT REMINDER “Ides” possibly derived from Latin iduare, which means “to divide.” Word possibly of Etruscan origin, per some.
The “Ides of March” occurs annually on 15 March of the old Roman calendar. It served asa marker of the full Moon that represented the beginning of a New Year (months of January and February added later on Julian Calendar under Julius Caesar). Romans considered “the Ides” to be time to settle interests and debts.
“English use of the Roman calendrical term always employs the Romans’ inclusive dating, including the ides itself when counting. Thus, the ‘third day before the ides of March’ (a.d. iii Id.
