(Reader: Mike) More on Calendars

I am certain that the Gregorian Calendar is more accurate than the Julian Calendar, and that is why they upgraded from Julian to Gregorian! They had too many leap years, and had gotten ten days ahead of the schedule. That is why they deleted ten days at the time they made the conversion – to get the calendar back in sync with the Earth’s path around the sun. If anybody wants to revert to the Julian Calendar, it would probably be Brandon, to add to his list of other notable accomplishments!

But I am advocating for the Biblical Calendar, and I wanted to give you a little insight into how it works. It would not be at all suitable for commerce, but it is what Heavenly Father would prefer for us to use for spiritual purposes. No doubt about it!

The Biblical Calendar is a 12 month calendar, and it always begins the year with the New Moon Day of Month 1 on the closest New Moon Day to the Spring Equinox. It has a 13th month every third year. When the year starts at this point, the events such as the barley harvest, all line up perfectly.

ALL Sabbaths on Heavenly Father’s Calendar fall on the 8th, 15th. 22nd or 29th day of the month. The calendar progression can be seen in the sky, if there are no clouds (see below.)  The day or the two days following the 29th day of any given month constitute the “New Moon Period.” Half the time it will be a one day period, and half the time a two day period.*

When the proverbial “First Crescent” is seen – and barring cloud cover, it WILL be seen, either on the day after the 29th, or the second day after the 29th   –  it marks the end of the First Day of the new month. The following day will be the first WORK day of the  new month. So, when the First Crescent is sighted, “Get ready to go to work in the morning.”  Then work for six days, and rest on the 7th day (completion of the first week, but the 8th day of the month.) Rest on the 8th day – the Sabbath – then work six more days, and rest on the 15th. Similarly for the third work week, work on days 16 through21, rest on the 22nd/Sabbath, and repeat for one more week, taking you to the final Sabbath of the month, the 29th day. Then on the 30th, in a 30 day month, or on the 30th day AND the following day, observe the New Moon period, and start a new month. EVERY weekly Sabbath in the Bible that includes a date reference will mention the day of the month as being the 8th, 15th, 22nd or 29th.

In ancient Israel, and I am sure among the Lamanites when they were righteous, and the Nephites also, they would have had watchmen on duty the day after the 29th, watching for the First Crescent. And when it was spotted, whichever of the two days it was – they would blow the shofar letting all the people know the next day would be a work day. Everybody would know to semi- rest on the 30th: the question being only whether to semi-rest the following day as well, or go to work the next morning. I say “semi-rest” because the gates of the Temple would be open, but attendance and avoidance of work was not mandatory.

In the sky, the people would see the first Sabbath on a pretty much perfect half-moon, the second on a full moon, the third on a waning half-moon, and on the fourth, a final crescent moon (most of the time.)

The Passover always starts at sundown on the fourteen day (first month) and so it is a Full Moon Feast. The Feast of Tabernacles always starts at sundown on the 14th day of the 7th month, so the first day of this Feast is on the 15th, and has a Full Moon appearance. Modern “Israel” doesn’t understand their own calendar, but they understand enough to call the Passover Day, and also the First Day of Tabernacles, both “High Sabbaths.” The Last Great Day of Tabernacles (8th day) falls on the next Sabbath, on the 22nd day of the 7th month.

While I am on the topic, I should also note that the First Day of the 7th month, the Day of Shoutings, is also treated as a Sabbath – no work! This is the only Sabbath of the year that does not  fall on the 8th, 15th, 22nd or 29th day of the month. And the 10th day of the 7th month is The Day of Atonement, and should be a day of no work and of soul-searching.

In modern Israel, they treat the Seventh month as the beginning of the year, but this is not scriptural.

When the Saints move back to Missouri, I am pretty confident that they will “Go up to the House of the Lord” on the New Moon Days and Sabbaths as described above. Again, Isaiah 66 & 23.

* Some followers of the Lunar Israelite Calendar will teach that the 30th day of the month, if the New Moon Day is the day AFTER the 30th, is to be treated as being in a category of its own, set aside for pondering and prayer. I think this is academic, since if you treat it as the first of two New Moon Days, you are essentially doing the same sorts of things, and this variant explanation makes the matter more complicated. Others will teach that the First Crescent signals the START of the New Moon Day, but that just adds confusion. How much more elegant to just observe the 30th as A new Moon Day every month, knowing that half the time it will be the ONLY New Moon Day, and if you don’t hear the Shofar at sunset, you can just continue in semi-resting for one more day.

Please feel free to pass this on to anybody you know who may be planning a return to Adam-ondi-Ahman!

PS  Just one more calendar note about the true Day of Pentecost. Instead of just a fifty day count, the proper procedure is to count SEVEN Sabbaths, starting with the First Sabbath AFTER Passover, and when you have completed seven Sabbaths, THEN you begin – the next day –  to count fifty days.  When Day 50 ends at Sunset, the Day of Pentecost begins, and usually – almost always, Pentecost will fall on a Sabbath if you are following Heavenly Father’s Biblical Calendar. Very cool the way this works out!
