Currently the World T20 Cricket Championship is in progress. It is a huge event followed by millions of fans in Africa, Asia, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and to a lesser extent, the Americas. A truly global event.
Quinton De Kok is the opening batsman for South Africa and recognised as one of the top and indeed one of the most exciting batsmen in world cricket. Yesterday (26th October) South Africa played last years world champions the West Indies. As the players boarded the bus to travel to the playing venue, they were informed that the South African Cricket board (in their ‘wisdom’), had sent an instruction to the team that they WILL all take the knee to support the BLM movement. Imagine getting on a bus all psyched up to take on the world champions, and then thrown this curved ball!
With huge ramifications to himself and his cricketing career, Quinton chose to listen to his conscience. This resulted in his decision to not take the knee. As a result he did not play. There is no doubt that he is fully aware of the possible consequences to his action. It could literally put an end to his career playing for South Africa. Yet he stood his ground as he obviously has enough strength of character to stand up for his beliefs, no matter the cost. Even if it means a loss of substantial income, and the loss of doing what he loves most, displaying his considerable talent against the world’s most ferocious and wily bowlers on the world stage.
Quinton I salute you. You are truly an unsung hero. The South African Cricket Board took away your freedom of choice, your right to your personal beliefs that are not related in any way to your role as a cricket professional representing your country.
You stood alone whilst others bent. You are not alone. You are now enshrined in the hearts of the Digital Warriors. Your s-------e has not gone unnoticed.
