Don’t Destroy the Tunnels
WE are getting the message that the tunnels are being blown up, filled with water or lava. The cost, I understand, to build a tunnel is in the billions of dollars. What a waste then to destroy them. Look what different countries are doing with tunnels. Especially Japan. Trains!! Convert the existing tunnels to railroads. Japan trains have speeds of 200 to over 300 mph. They are far more safer than air travel and fares cost less. Operation on electricity and not fuel. What a way to save the atmosphere. Tunnels are connected to major cities. Think of all the advantages underground railroads can do for the environment, safe travel, and lower fares. More people will travel saving a lot of funds. Very little security needed as in airports because you cannot hijack a train. No waiting in lines, just go to the train as in the subways and board. We are talking convenience. Consider the west coast:
Spokane to Seattle, Seattle to Portland, Portland to Salem, Salem to Eugene, Eugene to Medford, Medford to Sacramento, Sacramento to Los Angeles, Los Angeles to San Diego. Two tracks coming and going. Trains could leave every three hours. Approximate straight miles from Seattle to San Diego is 1060 miles. Average of 150 mph, which includes stops would take just over 7 hours. At the end the trains are switched over to the return tracks.
We could utilize these tunnels for the benefit of the people. Yes, it would cost money to convert, but I feel it better than to destroy. What a humanitarian project.
