What is Art and What is Science?
-Regaining the Legacy We Left Behind By Misusing the Meanings of Words

This piece is the first of two about our misuse of words, language, and meaning. Social conditioning through deliberate miseducation of the masses plus our lazy application of ‘common usage errors’ by ‘taking-the-easy-way-out’ attitude of the last one hundred years have degraded our communication and life experience. Materialism, in all its glory, seduced us out of our royal heritage of rich living.

The manipulation of our languaging by authoritarian powers includes the actual tampering of dictionary meanings starting over a hundred years ago. But mostly it is due to our lack of focus on what is most important to us, our willingness to compromise the richness of accurate, creative communication for the cheap thrill of clever but misleading words, that we have fallen into an abyss of ignorance and a sleep of cognitive dissonance thoroughly exploited by mass media and ‘education.’

The verb “to hack,” for instance, means to take a sharp tool like an ax and chop into something to get out of it what it is protecting:

Merriam-Webster:

hack

: to cut or sever with repeated irregular or unskillful blows
: to clear or make by or as if by cutting away vegetation

“He hacked his way through the brush.”

“Hacking into” someone else’s computer is one thing, but are you sure you want to hack your brain or your biology? Why the violent attitude? What does that say about our relationship to ourselves and the world?

How has the word “myth,” which means a sacred story handed down through time, created to transfer wisdom and history to us, come to mean something that’s a deception? Highly intelligent, well-intentioned popular authors with doctorates like Naomi Wolf (“The Beauty Myth”) and Gabor Mate (“The Myth of Normal”) have been hoodwinked into misusing the term.

And how did a man’s “family jewels” somehow become his “junk?” Do some men really feel that badly about themselves?

Why have we been doing this to ourselves?

It is our responsibility to reclaim our birthright of dignity and self-esteem, but first we have to pay attention to how we use our words. How we talk to ourselves and each other is critical to our health and evolution. It reflects how we use our minds and how we run our energy, and it can either cultivate Selfhood or destroy it.

It is wise to remember what Socrates had to say about this:

The misuse of language instills evil in the soul.

Today, we will examine two of the most important words in our language, Art and Science, looking at their true meanings, and how and why they became what they are today – false representations of the real things.

Part 1: What Is Art?

I Am An Artist

According to our current way of languaging, when someone says, “I am an artist,” that must mean that they draw, paint, or sculpt, making ‘art objects’ for personal satisfaction, sale, or beautification. Just a few largely right brain-oriented focuses.

When someone says, “I am a scientist,” that must mean they work in a lab with test tubes, wires, and measuring devices, making notes and working numbers to invent things or to try to understand the Universe. Almost strictly left hemisphere-dominant activities there.

Are these definitions really accurate? How did they come to be?

I am here to tell you that these limiting meanings have little to do with what Art and Science really are and what we should want them to be for us. We have learned to be satisfied with so little. There is an art to science and a science to art. Why have we insisted on separating them so completely?

After some brief history I will provide radical (root) definitions for both these studies and show what they are really meant to do and had always done before.

How I Came To It

In 1973, when I left college as a visual arts major, I held two paths simultaneously with enraptured attention: ‘Art’ and ‘Healing.’

I studied everything metaphysical – yoga, meditation, psychic development, massage, astrology, numerology, Tarot, psychology, Neo-Reichian bodywork… I had insatiable hunger for p----o-spiritual explorations that would help me personally and help others I could serve. I taught yoga and meditation. I gave readings.

I did this while studying with world-famous figurative sculptor, Stanley Bleifeld, and entering art shows. I won second prize in sculpture in 1975 at the Stamford Museum of Art in Connecticut. I drew nature scenes constantly.

My life was rich with various forms of self-cultivation, (hold onto that word; soon it will make all the sense in the world), but my mind was very perplexed because when I looked at the world around me, the word art didn’t mean what it was supposed to mean anymore.

I started to form the question, What is Art? There could be an art to almost anything. We hear this all our lives.

There’s an art to cooking.
There’s an art to talking.
There’s an art to spiritual practice.
There’s an art to gardening…

We’ve even bizarrely ascribed the word to making money and have decided that there is such a thing as martial art.

What do so many different activities have in common that makes each one an art? What’s the Golden Thread?

I spent three decades examining this question before I came to a clear understanding of what art actually is. It is only through prolonged experience and internal integration that one comes to the deepest, truest answers.

So, What is Art?

Art is neither a thing nor an action – it is a purpose.

Art is the cultivation of the highest in ourselves.

That is why anything can be an artform. It’s not what you are doing; it’s what you are doing it for. Pure art, when made, transduces (leads across) the maker and the experiencer to a higher state of being. It enhances awareness, which is limitless in its nature. You put yourself into it and your Self is what you get out of it.

If the work does not do that, then it’s not actually art. ‘Self-expression’ is not of itself art. Just because you made something doesn’t mean it’s art. Just because it gets published or appears in an ‘art’ gallery and others see it doesn’t mean it’s art. We have to be clear about our intention. One must be very conscious of what one is doing and what it is for.

Our society has been filled with those things that are not art, and astrologer-philosopher Dane Rudhyar called them “cultural by-products” :

The opposite of art, a step far below cultural by-products, is what degrades us. It is anti-art.

There is a famous anti-artist named Marina Abrahmavic who, along with her fellow Satanists, has tried to convince the public that smearing blood on a gallery wall or flagellating herself in public is an art form. This is wrong. It is mental illness and self-hatred in disguise as art. I provide this link for reference, but be warned about what you will see:

Gardening

It was my eventual epiphany around gardening that brought things together for me. Through my Daoist studies from the 1980s on, I began to understand how spiritual practice and the Earth were inseparable, and that that’s why Daoism, more than any other system, refers to its praxis as “self-cultivation.”

When you have a garden, how do you grow it?

Each morning you go out to visit and take a look around to see what needs to be done. When you do spiritual practice, don’t you do the very same thing?

…In your mind you have a vision. In your heart you have a desire. So whatever you do that day is exactly what your garden needs to fulfill that. Nothing more or less. You cultivate according to what the garden tells you it needs.

You don’t force a rigid structure, doing exactly the same thing daily; you follow inner guidance. You listen to what the garden tells you. You trust the subtle currents to guide your actions.

Following this path makes you an artist. It also makes you an alchemist. It also makes you a scientist. But we’ll get to that later…

There is really no work to be done, even though there is labor, because your desire for a happy result fills you with the excitement of creativity and gives you the wherewithal to handle whatever comes your way. It is that excitement that we must follow, leaving behind struggle against the elements, and any resistance we may have. Water is the strongest of forces because it resists nothing, thus over-powering everything. Rocks in the river wear down from the water. Loving what we do is the emulation of water flowing. Water is relaxed.

This is the Way of Art. One cultivates the highest in one’s Self through the use of this ‘soft force.’ Flow power, not push power.

Skill Is Not Art

Someone please explain to me how this is an art form:

Art Is About Joining, Not Separating

The word art comes from the Latin ars, meaning to join. This is essentially the same as the Sanskrit word yoga which means to yoke, to join mind and body as a functional unit for the soul. Fighting is skill at conflict that ends one person is left standing and the other is on the ground.

The art starts when the fighting stops. There is no ‘winning’ in art because it is inclusive, not exclusive. One is not against anything. We have ‘creative tension’ not conflict – the tension between where we are and where we want to be. We simply relax into the tension and it becomes power. It literally pulls us along.

I suggest that dancing is the opposite of fighting. In a dance, partners flow together in as graceful a unity as they can, and neither of them is trying to be “the last man standing.” The art comes from the joining not the fighting.

So, if art is the cultivation of the highest in ourselves, then what exactly is that highest thing?

The highest in ourselves that we cultivate is light and love, clarity and compassion.

This is our great freedom and happiness – sky-like awareness.

Part 2: What Is Science?

The word science comes from the Latin scire, meaning to know. Simply, to know. Not, to know by the exclusive use of devices external to ourselves. Not to know just through numbers. This is where some knowledge of the two hemispheres of our brain comes in handy, as well as knowing what historically preceded our loss of memory about what science and art really are.

Some Brief Human Backstory

Because of having been derailed from our natural connection with consciousness a very long time ago through cataclysmic events we know about (1) humanity has been deeply entrenched in fear programming and a racial amnesia, and has had to go through a long, long phase of being out of touch with itSelf, waiting for a time when the spiritual energies could line up with it again for its release from material delusion. Now is that time.

We entered the famous Age of Aquarius in 1998, and that is why so much darkness and confusion is being washed out of our system now. It is not just that we are leaving the Age of Pisces characterized by victimhood and self-punishment, but that we have started a new ‘Great Year’ of 26,000 years, a completely new astronomical precession cycle, and are clearing the remaining grief and craziness from that entire period now. For detailed and entertaining clarification of this transition please read my article, The Aquarian Age And A New ‘Great Year’ Began In 1998 -Clarifications About and Scientific Evidence of Our Transition Into A New Age, in which, I use both hemispheres of my brain together liberally :  )

We are now in a catharsis which will lead to a true renaissance of being.

Back To Science

Because the frequency of spirit down here was so low by four hundred years ago we committed to trusting the left hemisphere of the brain instead of the right, which is “The Master” (2), and we have ‘scienced’ ourselves into a dark, dirty, little corner.

This hemisphere cannot for the life of itself see connections, think holistically, or feel empathetically. Its major job is to keep track of details. It literally “cannot see the forest for the trees.” It is therefore dysfunctional when left to its own devices. It is narcissistic, because, for reasons that are hard to explain, it always thinks it knows more than it really does. So without the guidance of the right hemisphere’s global viewpoint and wisdom, it is literally psychopathic. It doesn’t understand relationship and love.

This is why psychopaths have been controlling the planet for hundreds of generations. We have been literally out of our ‘right’ mind.

Above: “This is where all my thoughts come from.”

Science as we know it now is not the search for truth. It has become technology in service to the ego, and it seeks to replace everything natural with simulacras artificial. Someone please tell me how artificial intelligence is better than natural intelligence. What craziness on our part would make us want to believe that the innate intelligence of the Source that runs through us is not as good as a computer’s? Largely, our thinking for a very long time has been the inversion of truth.

Psychiatrist-philosopher Iain Mcgilchrist, author of the quintessential treatise on brain hemisphere activity, The Master and His Emissary, said this in an interview:

I see AI and bureaucracy as two of the great attacks on the living world now. That the two of them are a massive push by the left hemisphere to dominate the world.

Please read Iain’s very excellent and inspiring thirty-page booklet called, Ways of Attending – How Our Divided Brain Constructs the World. It is a synopsis of The Master and His Emissary, and in it he explains the simple basics – our hemispheres do not really have different functions, most of our brain’s functions are shared; it is that they have two different ways of paying attention to the world. The right is holistic and sees everything at once as a unity and is therefore smarter. The left is designed for detailed seeing, but it can’t make judgment calls correctly because it hasn’t got any perspective. It doesn’t understand how everything works together as One, so it doesn’t know how to take care of the Kingdom. They were meant to work together, with the right side in control.

It is because of our fall into the left side that we forgot the true nature of science, which, until then, was approached much more holistically, from a spiritually-centered, compassionate base. With left and right working together we lived in a harmony of yin and yang, feminine and masculine, within us. We were in communication with everything around us. It was truly One World, and will be again.

By the time we got to around 1600 we were so dulled that we decided that the only way ‘to know’ anything was if we could see it, measure it, and control it. We decided that ‘knowing’ meant only intellectual knowing, and we attempted to disregard our higher, natural function of knowing – intuition, which is superior in understanding what we are and what is going on in the world. This is probably how, a long time ago, we stopped understanding each other in our one original language and started to “Babel.”

Now is a good time for another word lesson.

We have the miscreated word counter-intuitive, which means not what you would have thought it would be. The problem here is that intuition is not a form of thinking. It is para (beyond) thought. We’ve just forgotten how to use it.

This all comes from the arrogant delusion of the left hemisphere and the ego. And this is what is currently running our human world. And that is why there are hungry people on a planet filled with food.

Rembrandt (Rembrandt van Rijn)

What Is Intuition and What’s It Got To Do With This?

Intuition is our innate ability to directly know what something is, accurately and immediately, without the use of rational means. You just know.

Intuition is direct knowing. Not thinking or figuring out. It is the natural mind at work. I mean play. Did I say work? Sorry. The natural Self does not work. It is at play twenty-four hours a day. It is what we really are – Awareness – and nothing trumps it. Imagination is more important than thinking. Imagination is meant to guide thinking and acting.

Academia is filled with funny stories of scientists who fell asleep and dreamed the answer they were looking hard for, because their normal thinking mind couldn’t get in the way.

The natural mind is the real scientific mind. It is the mind of the enlightened one; one who has released oneself from believing one is a limited little ego in a limited little body here to do limited little things, like work, have kids, and die. One who is awake remembers true nature in relationship with the whole and produces beautiful things.

So, What, Then, Is Science, Really?

Based on the first definition we’ve established,

Science is the Art of Knowing.

Left hemisphere tools and procedures guided by right hemisphere vision and wisdom creates perfectly.

Science and Art cannot be separated, except artificially.

In Conclusion

Gnosis

The ancient Greeks used the word gnosis to represent the idea of direct knowledge of the Self – that which was found only within, because it is what we are within.

It is understood in the highest spiritual traditions that we are omni-scient (all knowing). We are natural know-it-alls.

There are no answers that are out of reach, no solutions impossible to have. Through the act of self-cultivation we know ourselves, so it is through the art of knowing, science in its true sense, that we become the alchemist-artists that we naturally are.

But, how do we get there from here?

The scientist-philosopher of the 1600s, Blaise Pascal, gave us the answer:

All of humanity’s problems
stem from man’s inability to sit quietly in a room alone.

Rest in Awareness

1. Cataclysms. There is very substantial scientific evidence of many kinds that humanity suffered at least one huge destructive event around 11,500 years ago. We know there was a cometary event and there is plenty to confirm the presence of prior civilizations we like to call “Atlantis.” The Mediterranean alone has over 200 sunken cities in it. The ancient Egyptians credited a prior civilization, their homeland, with everything they knew. Lots more where this came from.
