The “They’re eating the dogs! They’re eating the cats!” dance re-mix has gone viral on Tik Tok. How could it not?

In typical Trump fashion, he says something outrageous and bombastic in a major public forum and (some) people call him completely insane, others wonder why the hell he said it, and a small group know what he was referring to. Either way, he plants it in the public consciousness and it doesn’t go away.

Donald J. Trump began this entire story by coming down an escalator in Trump Tower and announcing his candidacy for President in 2015. He then launched into a tirade about massive problems at the southern border with illegal immigration and human and drug t---------g.

He said: “They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re r-----s. And some, I assume, are good people.”

The media lost their minds. Trump just said Mexicans are r-----s!

At the time, I wasn’t a Trump supporter. I thought he was running as a publicity stunt to promote his brand. And I wondered, why of all things is he making such an issue about the border? Is it really that big of a problem? His off-the-cuff language seemed like an unusual way to address it, ripe to be misinterpreted.

Yet, what happened was, in 10 seconds behind a podium, Donald Trump took an issue and sent it to the world in a way no ordinary, politically correct, speechifying politician could do in 10 years of talking about it.

The media couldn’t help themselves. They blasted it everywhere, because to them, the message was that he’s a crazy racist. They gave him a ton of free press to start his campaign, and put him on the news 24-7. And they unwittingly got his message out, to wit: the border is something we should all be thinking about.

Since that 10 second moment, which was Trump’s viral kick-off to his 2016 presidential campaign, the exact thing he was addressing has become one of the biggest issues in the country and is a major focal point in our 2024 election. That’s the power of Trump.

As far as the current “they’re eating pets!” viral moment, it does actually seem nuts when you first hear it, but on further investigation, it really isn’t that strange.

Springfield was a town of just under 60,000 people, according to the 2020 Census. Since then, an estimated 20,000 migrants have settled there, many of them from Haiti. Residents have said the situation is out of control and the city lacks the ability to handle these 20,000 Haitian immigrants.

First off, even in our own culture, duck is served in fine dining restaurants. There’s nothing unusual at all about eating it. And goose was once a popular Christmas dinner, though it has largely been replaced by turkey.

Reveyon is a celebration in Haiti around Christmas time. And cat is often served as a delicacy, in the countryside, and this dates back to their early traditions. It’s not commonly eaten during the rest of the year, but it’s something to be aware of in this story.

I haven’t heard anything related to the eating of dogs there, but according to Wikipedia: “dog meat is consumed to a limited extent in Korea, China, Indonesia, Nigeria, Switzerland, Vietnam, and India.” So, again, to different cultures, the eating of dogs is considered normal.

If you extrapolate this to the discussion at hand, and you take those 20,000 Haitian migrants overwhelming the resources of this mid-sized town, and add that to the actual real life police reports of migrants k-----g ducks and geese in local parks for food, and also about a half-hour of TV footage of people in Springfield complaining that their pets are missing, how crazy exactly is Donald Trump’s statement now?

It sounds unhinged when Trump says: “they’re eating cats, they’re eating dogs!” and the moderator says “that’s not true” and Trump responds: “I saw it on TV” and is then cut off.

Yet, President Trump did not just lose his mind and invent a story out of whole cloth just because Kamala said his rally’s suck and are boring. He was referencing the same problem that Kamala has completely ignored as the so-called border czar. Introducing mass migration to a system that can’t handle it, which then puts an undue burden on local communities. If you don’t live there, you don’t have to deal with it, but if you do, it can be a big problem.

Without borders you don’t have a country. Crime is the result of open borders. Drug t---------g is the result of open borders. Fentanyl alone k----d 75,000 people in the US in 2023. Human t---------g is the result of open borders. And yes, when women and girls are brought across the border by coyotes, they are sexually assaulted at a rate of about 60%. That’s more than 1 out of every 2 for those doing the math. And that is what Trump meant when he said, “they’re r-----s.”

Trump isn’t saying all of the Haitians in Springfield, Ohio are eating people’s pets. It doesn’t have to be more than a handful of people out of the 20,000 for his statement to be factually correct.

I don’t blame the Haitians, either. If you’re hungry, you’re going to find food. If the resources of the town are maxed out, or if you don’t have the money, what is so insane about finding an alternative source in the park like a duck? We might find it deeply strange, because our food comes neatly packaged to us from companies that source from established slaughterhouses, which, I’d assume, makes it a lot easier to deal with psychologically than ‘sourcing it’ in the wild.

Naturally, no one wants their beloved pet to be k----d and eaten. But, not everyone in the world has the same conception of dogs and cats as extended family members like we do.

And, if you recall, in 2019, President Trump signed into law the bill Preventing Animal Cruelty and T-----e Act (PACT), marking a new era in the codification of kindness and protection to animals in federal law.

The bigger issue at hand is that we need law and order at the southern border, and also that we cannot unreasonably tax the resources of small communities which cannot handle massive overnight influxes of migrants.

The United States of America has been and always will be a melting pot of various cultures. And when you attain citizenship here, you become an American, no matter where you originated from. This is different than in most places in the world. If I were to move to France and become a citizen there, I’d be a resident of that country, but I’d never become a French person. It’s different here. When you get your green card, you instantly become American and are accepted as such. Yet, you have to acknowledge, respect and live by the values of the place that has embraced you as one of their own.

In another viral video, from the 2016 election, called Winter is Trumping, based on Game of Thrones, the Trump character (from his own words) says:

“We have no border. We have no control. People are flooding across. We need to build a wall. And it has to be built quickly. The greatest builder is me. And I would build the greatest wall you have ever seen. And in that wall, we’re going to have a beautiful, big, fat door, where people can come into the country, but they have to come in LEGALLY.”

This is who Trump is. He doesn’t speak like an erudite Harvard professor or like a slick politician. He tells you how it is, sometimes straight, sometimes bombastically, sometimes self-promotingly, but always effectively, in his inimitable way.

And, guess what? We’re all talking about it now. Even the dogs and cats.
