(Reader: Charles) What is the “Meaning of Life?”

What is the “meaning of life”?  If I’ve asked myself any question more often, it has probably been, “what am I going to have for dinner?”

Sure, I wonder what the meaning of life is. Don’t we all?

But here’s the thing:  None of us know, but many of those who have sought the answer have accepted the scary reality:  there may be none.

What follows is a poor man’s philosophy, I know … and I’ve not made an extensive study of the great philosophers, but I do know what I have come to believe; and to live by, and there are two philosophers who came to the same conclusions.

The German philosopher Friedrich Nietzche believed (as I do) that there are no universal truths in life; the pursuit of “the meaning of life” is not only subjective and independent, but cultural mechanisms (nations, religions, corporations) keep us from realizing any true meaning of life, which can only be found within ourselves, any meaning in life is individual. We cannot discover it through anyone else or inside any social group.

Nietzsche is often portrayed as someone who believes that nothing matters in life; that there is no point in having a value system. Not quite true. He believed that we need new values, values that fit our finite condition (accept the fact that your life will end), accepting the suffering in life (yes, it sucks), and the constant struggle for survival. Exist.  Find your own “meaning of life”, because it is the only one that matters. Be fulfilled.

That other “nihilist” dude, the twentieth century philosopher … what’s his name? Albert Camus. Camus believed that the desire for finding the meaning of life is, in his words, “absurd”.  It’s absurd because it attempts to impose our own desires on a universe that simply does not give a good goddamn what we desire or what we think.  Camus felt that it is necessary to be aware of, and accept, the absurdity of life in order to transcend that absurdity. Basically, I think he meant: give up any thought of finding “the meaning of life” and find that meaning within yourself.  Creativity and self-expression (according to Camus) give meaning to our lives; in other words, we make our own meaning in life, we won’t find it looking at others or outside ourselves. There’s no grand meaning for life, there’s no “right” way to live; no one else can give us the answer to the question of “what’s the meaning of life?”  Freedom lies in living with the awareness of life’s absurdity and accepting that absurdity, instead of living with rationalizations, lies and false hopes. “Heaven” doesn’t exist, friend.

Neither of these philosophers were hopeless or despairing men. Instead, they found that an awareness of the meaninglessness of our existence actually frees us to create that meaning for ourselves.  That freedom is self-fulfilling. In other words, the first step to self-fulfillment may be simply abandoning the search for the “meaning of life.” Even if it exists, it is almost certainly unknowable.

You may find your individual fulfillment in religion, but you should also accept the fact that your beliefs are not objective truths, and they certainly aren’t beliefs that others need to adopt. Don’t try to force your own beliefs on others.
