Janelle hugged me close as we watched the plane lift off at 8:38 PM. Her face was wet with tears. She looked more beautiful than I could’ve imagined a woman looking. The tragedy and the majesty and the entire spectrum of life and death were in her eyes. The pain I felt at knowing we’d never see the trio again, transformed into my love for her, and the impending sense that one day we’d have to say goodbye to each other, too. I shut it from my mind and watched the plane disappear into the iridescent bank of clouds above us. Titor looked calm and calculated. He was on a mission and he did not have the inner space allotted for emotions of pathos and loss.
“Let’s go. We have work to do,” was all he said.
