My favorite commercial from this past super bowl, and maybe of all time, was the ad that merged the American Eagle and the Clydesdale into Pegasus for a brief shining moment.

The commercial spot came a day after a coin arrived for my collection called a Pegasus silver stater, from the Greek city-state Corinth, circa 300-350 BC. It features Pegasus on the obverse and a helmeted Athena on the reverse.

Pegasus, the winged horse, is one of the most famous creatures in Greek mythology, a divine, immortal steed— beautiful, swift, and able to fly. He was born from the blood of Medusa when the hero Perseus ventured into a remote, desolate cave, where the only light was a cold, ghostly shimmer bouncing off the lifeless eyes and faces of the petrified d**d. Perseus be****ed her, and as the Gorgon’s head was gone, Pegasus sprang forth fully formed (along with his brother Chrysaor) from her n*** or the blood that fell to the earth/sea.

The hero Bellerophon tamed Pegasus with the help of Athena, who gave him a golden bridle. Together Bellerophon and Pegasus performed great deeds, such as slaying the Chimera (fire-breathing monster) and clearing the realm of many other monsters and bandits.

In pride, Bellerophon tried to fly Pegasus to Mount Olympus to join the gods. Zeus, angered by the hubris, sent a gadfly to sting Pegasus, causing him to buck and throw Bellerophon to the ground. Bellerophon survived but was crippled and lived in misery. Pegasus himself was taken by Zeus to Olympus, where he became the bearer of thunderbolts and was placed among the stars as the constellation Pegasus.

The winged horse represents divine inspiration and poetic flight (he struck his hoof to create the Hippocrene spring, source of the Muses’ inspiration) and also the triumph of beauty and elevation over chaos and darkness (he was born from the death of a monster). But also the danger of hubris (Bellerophon’s fall).

For me, Pegasus reflects the human desire to break free from the limitations and fetters of the mortal world and touch the sublime and eternal– with a bit of Forrest Gump bursting from his shackles and braces and running wild like the wind. And who hasn’t dreamt of flying during many a nighttime slumber?

Budweiser beer drinking aside, the commercial links the winged horse of the ad spot with destiny of America in a way that could be telling. Something beautiful and triumphant can be born from darkness, but an Eagle eye must ever be kept for the downfall of hubris, or the excessive pride that could lead a person (or nation) to defy natural order, or moral limits — often resulting in their demise. In ancient Greek thought, hubris was a tragic flaw: mortals acting as if they were above fate, the gods, or human boundaries. The gods would punish it through nemesis (retribution), restoring balance.

Incidentally, as mentioned by a commenter, the Eagle used at the end was not AI. It’s an eagle named Lincoln rescued in Tennessee and trained by the American Eagle Foundation. Since he couldn’t be raised by his parents, he never learned to hunt and they tried releasing him into the wild twice and both times failed. They trained him for 5 years to fly stadiums and now he’s the mascot for the Philadelphia Eagles home games. And the real horse used in the spot is named Zeus.

The ad is a story of friendship and mutual support (across species, no less) and it celebrates Budweiser’s 150th anniversary and the United States’ 250th birthday. Perhaps there is something to be learned from it. Or maybe it’s just the sun in my eyes.
