Tenochtitlan
Tenochtitlan was the capital of the Aztec (Mexica) Empire and was built on an island in Lake Texcoco, directly above present-day Mexico City.
According to Aztec legend, the city was founded on the instructions of the god Huitzilopochtli, at the spot where an eagle was seen eating a snake on a cactus.
Based on this sign, the city’s foundations were laid in 1325 (this date is officially accepted).
Initially a small settlement, the city was enormously expanded with artificial agricultural islands (floating gardens) called chinampas, canals, dikes, and bridges (causeways).
By the 15th century, it had become the political, religious, and economic center of the Aztec Empire.
When the Spanish arrived in 1519, it had a population of approximately 200,000–300,000 (some estimates are higher).
At that time, it was one of the largest cities in the world; more populous than many European capitals (such as Paris and Rome).

In 1519, the Spanish, led by Hernán Cortés, reached the city.
While the Aztec emperor Moctezuma II initially showed hospitality, events quickly escalated into conflict.
During the Noche Triste (Night of Sorrow) in 1520, the Spanish suffered heavy losses.
However, in 1521, the Spanish and their native allies (especially Tlaxcala) captured the city after a 93-day siege.
The city was largely destroyed, the lake drained, and Mexico City was built on its site.
Founded in 1325, it was one of the world’s most impressive cities, transforming into a magnificent metropolis in just 200 years before being destroyed by the Spanish conquest in 1521.
