Helping Freedom Win: How I Cured my Hives for Good (to Hell and Back)

Hives (AKA Urticaria) are red, itchy welts or bumps that suddenly appear as itchy welts on the skin all over the body anywhere on the body.

One night about a year ago, I woke up suddenly with itchy welts. It got so bad that I had to get up and do something to help myself. What was this? Bug or spider bites? Poison ivy? These welts seemed to be erupting like mini-volcanoes, and they stung from the inside out as they popped out. A quick internet search led me to understand these intensely itchy welts were hives.

But How Did I Get Hives?

From my searches, I gathered they were likely triggered by some sort of allergen or stimulus. These could include certain foods, medications, insect stings, or even stress. However, I couldn’t readily think of what the cause could be.

After a couple of hours of itchy t*****e interspersed with desperate searching and experimenting, I found that using the froth from freshly cooked oatmeal as a cream worked to dry them up and stop the itching enough for me to get back to sleep.

A Year of Hell

After that initial episode of hives, I experienced repeat episodes from time to time. The more I tried to figure out what could be causing them, the less I understood. In the meantime, the situation worsened.

Were Antihistamines Necessary?

After a year of hives outbursts getting more frequent as time went on, I reached a point where the flare-ups happened almost nightly.

I finally decided to consult with a doctor. After all, it was interfering with my life, my sleep, and my happiness, and I had nowhere else to turn.

The doctor diagnosed me with chronic urticaria (hives) and recommended I take a non-prescription antihistamine called Zyrtec. This was a non-drowsy drug, and she said it should be taken every day, pretty much for the rest of my life.

To her (a doctor), I’m sure this sounded rational, but to me (a natural-healing near guru), it sounded insane. However, I must admit that I was so desperate that I went straight to the pharmacy and purchased my $50 bottle of Zyrtec right away. My plan was to take them long enough to help my body break the vicious cycle of nightly hives attacks and then figure out something else, more natural, to switch to.

My Brief Experience With Zyrtec

I was supposed to take just one tiny tablet a day, and that seemed fine for precisely two days, but then the hives returned despite taking Zyrtec. The instructions were that in this event, just simply take two tablets, and that would be “perfectly safe”, supposedly. So I upped my daily dose to two.

This latest predicament did not sit well with me, and my body didn’t like the excess antihistamines either. It was feeling dried out and off-kilter (i.e., I could sense the drug.) But what was I to do?

Further internet searching uncovered some things about Zyrtec that the doctor hadn’t mentioned, such as:

  • It’s important to note that while Zyrtec is generally safe, it can cause side effects such as dry mouth, drowsiness, and dizziness.
  • Zyrtec doesn’t typically cause physical addiction, but it can lead to dependency, where the body adapts to the drug’s presence.
  • This adaptation occurs over prolonged use, altering normal brain function.
  • If Zyrtec is stopped abruptly, withdrawal symptoms like severe itching (rebound itching), fatigue, anxiety, and difficulty concentrating can occur for some unknown period of time.
  • To avoid these symptoms, it’s best to take Zyrtec for the shortest possible time.

And, here’s the clincher. After a few more days, the hives returned despite the higher dose. There were plenty of other, more potent drugs the doctor could prescribe, but why would I go the medical route when it was clearly void of an honest answer to my predicament? In my book, an answer would have to be a cure, not just more masking (suppression) of symptoms.

So, I put the Zyrtec on the shelf, with a mental note “To use only if absolutely necessary,” and got back to work on the internet, searching for an honest answer. Then I found it!

Alpha-gal Syndrome (AGS)

I suspected all along that I must have developed some sort of food allergy, and just hadn’t figured it out yet. During that year from hell, I did eliminate almost all foods here and there, and the only thing that seemed to help was starvation (which, of course, could never be an answer).

However, I then came across an article about a relatively newly discovered syndrome. Here’s a brief bullet-point summary of it.

  • Alpha-gal (a sugar found in the blood of most mammals, but not in human blood) is transferred to human blood in rare instances via a tick or other insect bite.
  • Humans don’t naturally produce alpha-gal, so in some people, the immune system mistakenly identifies it as a threat, which triggers the immune system to become sensitized to it.
  • Later, when the person eats red meat or products containing alpha-gal…
  • Their immune system releases histamine and other chemicals, causing an allergic reaction (i.e., hives).

That very day that I discovered this information was the last day I ever had hives! Yes! I stopped eating all beef (or meat from mammals) and other products derived from mammals (such as milk, cheese, and butter). [Note: Fish and chicken are okay, since they aren’t mammals.]

I can’t tell you how wonderful it feels to be free from hives after this year from hell! But the story gets even better.

Following a diet free from alpha-gal was quite drastic. It meant giving up some of my favorite foods for the rest of my life. So, I didn’t stop there. I continued my internet searching and found a natural way to cure Alpha-Gal syndrome. This discovery was empowering, putting me back in control of my health and my life.

Soliman Auricular Allergy Treatment (SAAT)

When searching for cures for hives, it’s crucial to use the right search terms to find the correct information. After a long journey, I finally discovered a natural remedy for hives caused by an Alpha-Gal allergy. It’s called SAAT (Soliman Auricular Allergy Treatment), and it’s a type of Auriculotherapy (ear acupuncture) developed by Dr. Nader Soliman. [Auriculotherapy is a type of acupuncture that focuses on the ear, based on the idea that the outer ear maps the whole body, similar to reflexology.

In SAAT, a tiny, semi-permanent needle is inserted into a particular point on the ear. This needle stays in place for 3 weeks to “retrain” the immune system and reduce allergic responses. The process is painless and non-invasive, making it a popular choice for those seeking natural remedies.]

Oh Joy!

I found a SAAT-certified acupuncturist locally and am mid this treatment right now. I’ll update this article when finished. In the meantime, it’s a great joy that I cured my hives naturally, and it will be the literal “cream” on top when I’m back to being alpha-gal allergy-free once more.
